Greetings John,

The below for your attention about your telephone enquiry with regards transportation of fuel in the Port.  Below Guidelines from our Fire Department.

Some activities were noted by the Security Division who asked for assistance from Fire Department as some members of the public were transporting fuel in unmarked and unsuitable containers.

Below are the guidelines on how to store (meaning the container holding the fuel) and transport fuel.

  • Oil and lubricants may only be only be stored/transported  in the same container as it was purchased and therefore cannot be transported in small amounts which have been decanted into smaller unsuitable containers. Unless these smaller containers (whether steel or plastic) are SABS approvedfor the storage and transporting of fuel.
  • Petrol and diesel at ambient temperature has a low flow flashpoint (will readily ignite on the application of an open flame) and may  only be transported in SABS approved safety containers.
  • Unmarked containers are not recommended at all as we would not know the product and how to deal with it during an emergency.
  • I consulted with the Metro Fire Department and I was informed that for the transportation of any fuel(petrol, diesel, lube oil etc,) above the amount of 200L an application must be made to them for a “Licence to transport Petroleum/Flammable Liquid” as per the Municipal Bylaws. According to this bylaw the vehicle must be adequately marked with the Hazardous Chemical Symbols and Markings as determined by the bylaw.

The transportation of fuel into the port is allowed if there is compliance to the above mentioned.

Please share with your members for compliance purposes and avoid uncalled refusal to enter the Port.

Best Regards
